What makes a thumbnail get clicked
YouTube's own Creator Academy advice boils down to three things: the thumbnail should be accurate to the video, readable at small sizes, and distinct from what surrounds it in the feed. In practice that means:
- One focal point. A face with a clear expression, a product or a single striking object. Three competing subjects become zero at 168 pixels wide.
- Few, large words. Most feeds show your thumbnail next to the title, so the thumbnail text should add a second hook rather than repeat the title.
- Contrast. Light on dark or dark on light, with an outline or box behind text. The editor shows a live contrast ratio when you select a text layer on a colour background.
- Keep the bottom-right clear. YouTube puts the video length there. The “Show timestamp” overlay marks the spot.

What size does the thumbnail maker export?
1280×720 pixels, the 16:9 size YouTube recommends. PNG keeps text crisp; JPG is smaller and stays under the 2 MB limit that applies when you upload from the YouTube mobile app.
Do I need design skills?

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
The canvas itself stays on your device. If you use “Cut out person” or the AI person cut-out on the background remover page, that one photo is sent through Vercel AI Gateway to an AI model and is not stored. The flat/green-screen removal mode runs locally and never uploads anything. Only the text you type into the AI tools is sent to the AI model, and only when you press an AI button.
Can I make thumbnails on my phone?
Yes. The editor works with touch: tap to select, drag to move, drag the yellow square to resize. The panel moves below the canvas on small screens.
What do YouTubers use to create thumbnails?
Most use an image editor with layers: Photoshop or Photopea for full control, or a template tool like Canva or ThumbCraft for speed. The process is always the same: a strong photo, a cut-out subject, two to four big words and a 1280×720 export.
Is a YouTube thumbnail 4:3 or 16:9?
16:9. Upload 1280×720 (or any larger 16:9 size). A 4:3 image gets black bars or is cropped. The 4:3 files you sometimes see (sddefault, hqdefault) are YouTube's own legacy copies with letterboxing.
Can ChatGPT or AI make a YouTube thumbnail?
