Safe zones
YouTube overlays the video length in the bottom-right corner, and on hover, the Watch later and Add to queue icons in the top-right. Keep faces and words out of the bottom-right 15% of the width. The thumbnail maker shows the timestamp as an overlay so you can check this while designing.
Should I upload larger than 1280×720?
A larger 16:9 image (1920×1080 or 3840×2160) can look sharper on TVs and high-density screens, as long as it stays within the upload size limit. 1280×720 remains the dependable baseline: it is accepted on every upload path and looks crisp on phones and laptops.

Can I upload a 1920×1080 or 4K thumbnail?
Yes, any 16:9 image of at least 640 px width is accepted as long as the file is within the size limit. Larger images can look sharper on TVs, but a 1280×720 image is the dependable standard and is always accepted.
What happens if my thumbnail is not 16:9?
