How to make a YouTube thumbnail
Seven steps, about ten minutes, no design software. One idea runs through all of them: a thumbnail is judged at the size of a postage stamp.
Legibility lab: will your words survive the feed?
Drag the width down to the sidebar size (168 px), add words, and switch the outline off. This is the single most common reason thumbnails don't work.
| Letter height on screen | ≈ 65.0 px |
|---|---|
| Contrast text vs. background | 1.68:1 |
| With black outline/box | 21.00:1 |
Clear at this size.
Why this happens
Readability depends on two things. Size: a 130-pixel headline at 1280 wide shrinks to about 17 pixels at 168 wide, roughly the size of this paragraph. Five words at that width drop under 9 pixels. Contrast: the WCAG guideline for text is a luminance ratio of at least 4.5:1 (3:1 for large text). White on yellow sits around 1.4:1, so it disappears. A thick dark outline creates its own contrast edge around every letter, whatever is behind it. That's why almost every successful thumbnail uses one.

1. Decide what the viewer should feel
Before opening any tool, finish this sentence: “When someone sees this, they should think ___.” Curiosity (“what happened?”), desire (“I want that result”) or surprise (“that can't be right”). The thumbnail shows that feeling; the title explains it.
2. Get one strong photo
Take a dedicated photo rather than a random video frame: good light on your face, a clear expression, eyes visible. For product or tutorial videos, shoot the result, such as the finished dish or the fixed screen.
3. Pick a layout
Choose a structure that matches your hook: face and words, versus, before/after or big number. Browse 270 templates grouped by layout and niche.
4. Cut out the subject
A cut-out subject on a simple background reads much faster than a full photo. Use the background remover, then add a white or yellow outline so the subject separates from the background.
5. Write two to four words
The words should add to the title, not repeat it. If the title is “I Tried Living on $20 for a Week”, the thumbnail might say “DAY 5…” or “NOT AGAIN”. The title generator writes title and thumbnail-text pairs.
6. Check it small
Use the legibility lab above, the editor's phone-size preview, or drop the export into the thumbnail tester next to other videos. Keep the bottom-right corner clear for the timestamp.
7. Export and upload
Export at 1280×720, JPG if you need to stay under 2 MB. In YouTube Studio: Content → your video → Thumbnail → Upload file. With Test & Compare you can upload up to three versions and YouTube picks the one with the most watch time.
Questions
How do I make a YouTube thumbnail for free?
Open the ThumbCraft thumbnail maker, pick a template, upload your photo, cut out the background, change the text and download a 1280×720 PNG or JPG. There is no account or watermark.
How many words should a thumbnail have?
Usually two to four. The legibility lab on this page shows why: at the sidebar size of about 168 pixels wide, a five-word line shrinks below readable text size.
What font is best for YouTube thumbnails?
Heavy, condensed sans-serifs such as Anton, Bebas Neue and Montserrat Black. They pack big letters into little width. See the thumbnail font tester for a side-by-side comparison.
How do I upload a custom thumbnail?
In YouTube Studio, open Content, choose the video, then under Thumbnail choose Upload file. You need a verified channel; verify with a phone number under Settings, Channel, Feature eligibility.
Should I put my face on the thumbnail?
For personality-led channels a clear, expressive face is one of the most reliable focal points, because people notice faces first. For product, tutorial or scenery videos, the object or result can be the focal point instead.
