What makes a font work on a thumbnail

  • Weight. Thin strokes vanish when scaled down. Use Black or Heavy weights only.
  • Narrow width. Condensed letters let you make words taller in the same space, and height is what survives shrinking.
  • Simple shapes. Script, serif and decorative fonts lose their details at 168 pixels wide.
  • An outline. A dark stroke around light letters (or the reverse) keeps text readable on any background.
